Meteorite Pendant…for an out-of-this-world person!!
This pendant was created with a piece of genuine meteorite.
The meteorite slice is set in sterling silver.
A small stamped design circular element spins loosely
around on the front side. The design hangs 1-1/4” from the
sterling silver box style chain (20” long).
The meteorite alone measure 7/8” x 1/2” and feature a
beautiful etched “Widmanstatten Pattern” on the surface
(see history below). This pendant is one-of-a-kind.
The Muonionalusta Meteorite is a rare iron meteorite
originally found in 1906 near Kiruna, Sweden.
It was likely carried from the original place of fall
(from space) by glacier action. Pieces of it are strewn
across a large area. The strewn field is found in the
Artic Circle making searching for it very difficult.
It is composed of various alloys of iron and nickel
derived from molten planetary cores that were broken
apart billions of years ago. The crystalline patterns
are called “Windmanstatten Patterns” …these patterns
can only form in the vacuum of space where the molten
pieces of planetary cores come into contact with very
few molecules to which they can transfer their heat
and then cool down. The large metallic crystals are
characteristics of meteorites that require millions of
years of cooling to form from a molten planetary core
fragment. It has been estimated that it took 1000 years
for these molten piece of planetary core to cool by 1
degree Celsius! The Muonionalusta meteorite fell in
prehistoric times. It is iron octahedrite which is
composed of cubic Kamacite crystal with fine Taenite
occupying the space between.
