ANTIQUE SHELL BUTTON EARRINGS
ANTIQUE SHELL BUTTON EARRINGS...................$45.OO pair
These unique earrings were created from vintage
mother of pearl shell buttons. This design features
two matching and hand carved shell buttons that dangle
from sterling silver loops. The loops are soldered shut
and buttons will not come off. The buttons hang
approximately 1 1/8” from the sterling silver French hook
style ear wires. The diameter of each button is 7/8”.
Different species of mussel shells were harvested from
the Mississippi, Ohio, and other larger rivers from the
1890’s to 1940’s. This natural material was cut, drilled,
and polished in factories built along the rivers.
Many workers were employed to both gather and process
the shells to make buttons. These buttons are a piece of
“Americana”…being a product of our great rivers and
the work of American craftsmen of the past.
