This shark tooth fossil is very old…not from modern sharks in the
waters today. Although the process time varies, it takes
approximately 10,000 years for a shark tooth to become
a true fossil! The different colors in fossil teeth were
determined by the sediment that it fossilized in millions of
years ago. Sharks are ancient creatures that can be traced
back 375,000,000 years. Their distribution was world wide.
Sharks have many rows of teeth which are lost and re-grown
...even as fast as 7 or 8 days to replace one.
Some sharks lose as many as 30,000 teeth over a lifetime.
