These unusual sterling silver earrings are created by method of
lost wax casting and are based on an actual petroglyph
...or ancient rock art. The sterling silver foot print design
dangles 1” from the French hook style ear wires, and is ½” wide.
Blue glass beads accent the ear wires. The silver has been
patinaed to highlight the incised images.
About the image... The actual petroglyph this design is taken
from is a 3,000 lb artifact! The artifact is a sandstone boulder
which was carve into by the indigenous people in what is now
northwestern Alabama. This boulder is called the Martin Petroglyph
(site is named for modern land owner that owned the artifact).
Numerous feet, pits, snakes, straight and meandering lines are
incised into the boulder. The most notable designs are the large
and small four-toed right feet …which are separated by snake images.
The boulder glyphs were carved during the Woodland or early
Mississippian culture periods. This sterling silver design
replicates one of the mysterious footprints. Some theories are
that the prints represent special people like shamens or medicine
men in the tribe. Others think they could be bear prints or
bear/ human prints (again, shamens transform into animals).
What ever the inspiration, they are beautiful and meaningful images
left for us by ancient people of the past.
